Stephenson's Rocket: where the modern railway begins (1829)

The Rocket wasn't the first locomotive: it was the first modern one. Robert Stephenson designed it for the Rainhill Trials of 1829, where five engines were entered to win the contract to work the Liverpool and Manchester Railway; the Rocket won outright, reaching 48 km/h, thanks to the multitubular boiler that set the pattern for steam power for the next 150 years. And here the original was not lost: the real Rocket survives, preserved since 1862, and is displayed today alongside its Rainhill rival.

In 1829 the Liverpool and Manchester Railway held the Rainhill Trials to find the best locomotive for their line.

The winner, from a field of five entries, was George Stephenson and his Rocket. This locomotive, which only weighed 4.2 tons, had a multi-tubular boiler, almost 6 ft long with a diameter of 3 ft 4 in, that was of great efficiency in terms of heat transfer. The pistons, in the cylinders, which were set at an inclined position, were coupled up to 4 ft 8 in diameter drive wheels, and she was capable of reaching speeds of up to 25 mph.

Because of her characteristics, the Rocket was the first useful and practical locomotive in terms of transporting passengers and goods, launching a new age in the history of transport.
