“Mighty Mo”

The Iowa-class battleship played a prominent role in U.S. naval history.

The USS Missouri (BB-63), also known as "Mighty Mo," is more than just a ship. This battleship played crucial roles in World War II, the Korean War, and the Gulf War. Commissioned in 1944, it actively participated in World War II, notably in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, as well as the bombing of the Japanese archipelago.

The most significant event in its history occurred on September 2, 1945, when the unconditional surrender of Japan was signed on its deck, officially ending World War II. Subsequently, it served in the Korean War, providing naval fire support to United Nations forces.

In the 1980s, the battleship was reactivated and modernized as part of the U.S. Navy’s fleet expansion plan. During the Gulf War in 1991, the USS Missouri (BB-63) saw action again, supporting Operation Desert Storm with bombings and missile attacks.

Throughout its distinguished service, the USS Missouri (BB-63) was awarded 11 Battle Stars. Today, as a floating museum, it continues to inspire new generations by reminding them of the value of military service and the importance of history. Its legacy remains a powerful testament to the impact and relevance of battleships in naval and military history.
