History of the HMS Victory
The HMS Victory is a legendary British ship of the line, famed for her role as Admiral Horatio Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. At the time, she was the largest vessel in the Royal Navy. Today, she resides in dry dock in Portsmouth, Hampshire, southern England, serving as a historic museum ship—and still holds the title of flagship of the Second Sea Lord, an honorary distinction in the Royal Navy.
Did you know you can admire the remarkable HMS Victory at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth? There, you’ll have the unique opportunity to explore every section of the ship—from the Great Cabin where naval strategies were devised, to the lower gun deck, where life at sea under Vice Admiral Lord Nelson was both heroic and harsh. The museum is located about two hours south of London and is a must-see for model ship enthusiasts and history lovers alike.
