History of the Endurance ship
In the race to conquer the South Pole, three legendary explorers stood out: Ernest Shackleton, Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen.
The Endurance was launched on 17 December 1912 under the name "Polaris". Originally rigged as a frigate, it was later refitted as a three-masted barquentine. In 1914, it embarked on the renowned "Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition" led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, aiming to cross the Antarctic continent.
After a devastating shipwreck on 19 August 1915, the crew was stranded in the ice of the Weddell Sea. For 522 days, they endured hurricane-force winds reaching 300 km/h and temperatures plunging to minus 40°C.
Shackleton, aboard the small boat "James Caird" with a few men, undertook one of the most heroic voyages in the annals of exploration. Together with his full crew, they achieved the greatest victory of all—survival.
The expedition is remembered as a legendary tale of courage, resilience and human endurance.
