History of the HMS Beagle
The HMS Beagle remains one of the most celebrated ships in British maritime history. She gained fame for her scientific voyage under Commander Robert FitzRoy, accompanied by a young Charles Darwin — a journey that profoundly influenced our understanding of the natural world.
Launched on the River Thames on 11 May 1820, the HMS Beagle was built at the Woolwich shipyards. During the coronation of King George IV that same year, she proudly became the first vessel to sail beneath the newly completed London Bridge.
The Beagle completed three major expeditions, but it was her second voyage that truly made history. Darwin spent over three years exploring land and sea, making observations that would inspire one of the most significant scientific theories of all time.
