The ship that fired over the walls (18th century)

The Candelaria is a bomb vessel: a ship built around its two mortars. The type was born in France at the end of the seventeenth century — Algiers met its shells in 1682 — and it changed siege warfare: for the first time a ship could reach the inside of a fortified town with plunging fire. To make room for the mortars, the mainmast was moved back almost to the centre of the hull. The Spanish Navy used these vessels in blockades and coastal sieges.

The Candelaria is a Mediterranean bomb vessel, the size of a brig but broader and with two masts: the main mast is positioned almost in the centre with a round rig and the small mizzen mast has a gaffsail. Between the main mast and the forecastle are the mortars.

The Candelaria was designed and built to work as a floating battery when blockading ports or during sieges of sea forts.

The reproduction of the model is faithful to the original. Our model kits will provide you with all the elements necessary to ensure the reality of your model ship, down to the smallest imaginable naval detail.
