The floating palaces of the Mississippi (19th century)

The Mississippi does not reproduce a specific boat, but a whole lineage: the paddle steamers that ruled the great American river through the nineteenth century. The first, the New Orleans, came down from Pittsburgh in 1811; the Washington introduced in 1816 the double deck that fixed their silhouette forever. Floating palaces of wood driven by a steam engine, they linked New Orleans with the North. One writer came off their decks: Mark Twain.

These legendary riverboats sailed the Mississippi throughout the 19th century, following a route that passed through the most emblematic cities along the river’s banks, from its origins in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to the mouth of the river, down in New Orleans. The main characteristic of these delightful wooden boats were the great, steam engine powered paddle-wheels.
