The flagship of the Spanish Armada made it home (1588)

The San Martín was born Portuguese — São Martinho — and passed to Spain in 1580 with the union of the crowns. Álvaro de Bazán's flagship at the victory of Terceira, she was chosen to lead the Armada of 1588 because she was the best ship in the fleet. She took the worst of the English Channel and of Gravelines, where two divers plugged her leaks in the middle of the battle, and she brought Medina Sidonia back to Santander.

It was the flagship of the Spanish Armada. On 22nd March 1588, Alonso Pérez de Guzman, the duke of Medina-Sidonia, admiral of the Spanish armada, unfurled his ensign on the galleon's mainmast.

This was one of the few ships that managed to escape the storms and the English fleet's guns.
