A pirate with paperwork: the privateer's trade (17th–19th centuries)

The Corsair does not reproduce a specific ship: it is an Occre design faithful to a documented practice of privateering — taking a merchant brig and turning it into a predator, with 16 guns and 4 swivel guns. Because a privateer was not quite a pirate: he sailed under a letter of marque, a state licence to attack enemy trade in return for a share of the spoils. Private war, legal and profitable — serious enough that it took an international treaty to abolish it, in 1856.

This originally merchant brigantine was transformed when it got into the hands of the corsairs, and fitted out with 16 cannons and 4 falconets, which all helped them to carry out their misdeeds with better chances of success.

The corsair's "trade" was in many cases practiced with the permission of the state, giving them carte blanche for piracy.
