The ship that sailed farthest north and farthest south (1892)

The Fram — "forward" in Norwegian — was launched in 1892. Colin Archer designed her around a radical idea: a rounded hull that the ice, as it closed in, would lift instead of crush. She served on three polar expeditions: Nansen's Arctic drift (1893-1896), the Canadian Arctic with Sverdrup (1898-1902) and Amundsen's conquest of the South Pole (1910-1912). No wooden ship has ever sailed farther north or farther south.

History of the Fram Polar Ship

The Fram Ship was a distinguished Norwegian vessel designed to withstand the extreme conditions of late 19th-century polar expeditions. Built in 1892, its reinforced construction allowed it to venture into the inhospitable regions of the Arctic and Antarctica. Under the command of the renowned Fridtjof Nansen, the Fram reached previously uncharted latitudes, playing a key role in the search for new routes through the ice. Later, the ship served in the expeditions of explorer Otto Sverdrup, mapping unknown areas of northern Canada, and in those of the legendary Roald Amundsen, who, with the Fram’s help, became the first man to reach the South Pole in 1911.

Thanks to these achievements, the Fram is considered one of the most famous polar exploration ships in history.
