The most beautiful ship in the world is still sailing (1931)

The Amerigo Vespucci was launched in 1931 at Castellammare di Stabia as a training ship for the Italian Navy. Her designer, Francesco Rotundi, conceived her in the image of the 74-gun ships of the eighteenth century: a sailing ship from another age built in the middle of the twentieth. Almost a century later she is still in service, training the cadets of the Accademia Navale. Tradition has it that an American warship once signaled her: "You are the most beautiful ship in the world."
