History of the HMS Beagle
The HMS Beagle is one of the most celebrated ships in naval history. She became legendary for her scientific expedition led by Commander Robert FitzRoy, joined by a young Charles Darwin — a voyage that reshaped our understanding of the natural world.
Launched on the River Thames on 11 May 1820 and built at the Woolwich shipyards, the HMS Beagle was first seen during the coronation festivities of King George IV, when she proudly became the first vessel to pass beneath the new London Bridge.
The Beagle completed three major voyages. It was during her second expedition that Darwin joined the crew, spending over three years exploring land and seas. His discoveries aboard this ship would inspire one of the most influential scientific works of all time.
