Pacific 231: the locomotive with its own symphonic work (1923)

The Pacific is the queen of the golden age of express travel: 231 is its French wheel notation — two, three, one —, power and speed for the great passenger trains. The first reached Spain in 1911, built at Mulhouse for the Compañía del Norte, and in France these engines hauled legends such as the Flèche d'Or into the 1960s. Their rhythm even hypnotised music: in 1923 Honegger dedicated his symphonic movement Pacific 231 to them.

The Pacific 231 was built by the Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques, in Mulhouse, France.

The success of these fast and powerful locomotives meant that they were ideal for pulling large, fast express passenger trains, both in Spain and France. In fact, Pacific 231 trains continued in active service in France right up until the sixties.

This locomotive, which was also known as La Princesa, represents one of the most glorious pages in the history of French railway transport. Pacific type locomotives, during their many years of service, pulled some of France's most emblematic trains, such as the famous Fléche d'Or.

Photo-etched brass: Photochemically etched brass parts for the finest detail, impossible to reproduce in wood.
Zamak castings: Detail parts such as cannons, anchors and deck fittings, cast in zamak for a solid, realistic finish.
