The galleon that escorted the silver of the Indies (1629)

The Apóstol Felipe was one of the six galleons that Martín de Arana built at Zorroza, near Bilbao, under a contract signed with Philip IV in 1625. She escorted the silver of the Indies with the Armada de la Guardia from 1629, crossed to Flanders and fought as second flagship at the Battle of the Downs in 1639 — and she was one of those that came back. Few series of galleons are so well documented: her story survives contract by contract, entry by entry.

The Apóstol Felipe was one of the six galleons built by Martín de Arana for King Felipe IV. It formed part of the "Silver Galleons". This kind of galleon was used for transporting goods and treasures in the "Race for the Indies". Its first voyage as a member of the galleon fleet was made in 1629, transporting treasures to Spain.

It was an Admiral vessel of the Guardian Armada until 1633. It took part in the war of Brazil to recuperate Pernambuco and transported troops and money to Flanders, taking part in the battle of Dunas.
