Discover the Royal Fortune pirate ship model kit, the flagship of Bartholomew Roberts — known as Black Bart — one of the most legendary names in 18th-century piracy. This OcCre wooden model ship kit invites you to build, piece by piece, the vessel of the man who captured over 400 ships in just three years and marked the end of the Golden Age of Piracy.

History of the Royal Fortune, Black Bart's Ship

In 1719, a Welsh sailor was captured by pirates. He wanted no part of it. But when the crew elected him captain, Bartholomew Roberts never looked back. In just three years he became the most successful pirate in history, capturing more vessels than anyone before or since.

Roberts didn't fit the pirate mould. While others drank rum until they dropped, he preferred tea. He wore crimson silk, a feathered hat and a gold chain with a diamond cross stolen from the King of Portugal himself. He was feared from Brazil to Newfoundland. He created one of the strictest pirate codes ever known. And he designed his own flag: himself standing, sword in hand, on the heads of his enemies from Barbados and Martinique — marked with the initials ABH and AMH.

The name Royal Fortune didn't belong to a single ship. Roberts renamed every vessel he took as his flagship. It wasn't just a name — it was a pact. Because for him, fortune was never an accident. It was something to be conquered.

His end came on 5 February 1722 off Cape Lopez, when grapeshot from HMS Swallow struck him in the first broadside. His crew threw his body overboard before the authorities could seize it. Even in death, he refused to let others decide his fate. Many historians consider the Golden Age of Piracy ended with him.

Little-known facts:

In his boldest raid, Roberts approached a Portuguese fleet of 42 vessels disguised as a French merchant. He escaped with 40,000 gold coins and a diamond cross intended for the King of Portugal. In Newfoundland, he captured 22 merchant ships and 150 fishing boats in a single harbour, almost without resistance. And the nickname "Black Bart" was never used in his lifetime — it appeared years later in a poem, as if the legend needed time to catch up with the man.

What's in the kit?

Everything you need to build the Royal Fortune from scratch, with premium materials and historical accuracy:

  • Step-by-step assembly instructions
  • Video tutorials
  • Full-size plans
  • Laser-cut plywood sheets
  • Limewood, African walnut and sapelli planking strips
  • Cast metal fittings and photo-etched brass parts
  • Hand-sewn cotton sails

Three woods, one legendary ship

Each wood has been chosen for a reason. Limewood offers a soft, fine grain ideal for carving intricate details. African walnut provides the dark tone and hardness of the hull planking. And sapelli, with its rich reddish grain, adds the warmth of noble hardwoods. Together, they reproduce the textures and tones that make this model a truly distinctive piece. Photo-etched brass parts faithfully replicate the original fittings and cannons, while hand-sewn cotton sails complete a silhouette that commands attention on any shelf.

The Royal Fortune Model Kit and Its Pirate Legend

The OcCre Royal Fortune is far more than a modelling challenge. It's an invitation to relive the story of the man who captured everything and the ship that made it possible.

With 3,237 parts and an estimated 460 hours of build time, this is a project that will accompany you for months. You don't need to be an expert — the difficulty level is medium and you have step-by-step instructions and video tutorials to guide you. But when you finish, you'll hold a 1/65 scale replica of one of the most legendary vessels in naval history.

If you're fascinated by history, navigation or the satisfaction of creating something extraordinary with your own hands, the Royal Fortune is for you. Because fortune was never an accident. It wasn't for Roberts. It won't be for you either.

Super Bausatz.

Buccaneer, Cisne Negro, Fram, Palamos y Royal Fortune). Ya tengo una flota muy bonita.

This is my first adventure in to the world of model wooden ships. Being an ex cabnit maker and working with wood and also been making plastic models for a number of years. It seemed this kit is well withing my skill set and ability. I got the royal fortune as looked a very nice kit to start with and I am impressed with the layout of the kit and the instructions and video tutorials. Inside the box I was met with nice packaging and that wonderful smell of wood and the glistening of metal parts. The ribs went together hassle free and the decking was fairly straightforward but still to attach to the hull. I have no doubt that I will find some bits taxing at times bit I think that is to be expected. As for dealing with occre direct everything went smoothly and was delivered by fed-ex around 5 days later. Only surprise was a hefty 20% vat bill. As could order from a uk shop at occre's rrp making the the kit cheaper by £78 including fed-ex handling charge. Was very disappointed as that extra i could have got the san Felipe. But it has made me worried about buying kits direct instead maybe get them from a uk shop. But all in all fantastic service and a great kit.

I am in the first steps. Just finished planking and ageing the decks.

Ottimo kit come sempre.

Can't wait to start building

Love the kit and everything, only draw.. stuck in customs for a week because customs didnt want to look at the delclaration that was attached..

The model is great, but I wish it came with the tools that it shows are needed. the nail pusher and the device to trim and shape the wood are not included and I didn't know I needed them

All the materials appear to be topnotch. The castings are cleanly cast.

I haven’t started on it yet. I’m still working on the Essex. I’ll send you some pictures when I get started.

Ansprechende Verpackung, zum bauen bin ich leider noch nicht gekommen!

Ainda não utilizei.

Haven't had a chance to start it yet because I do have 2 other current builds taking up room now. When it arrived I did start watching the videos for the Fortune, and can't wait until I can get it started. I will share photos of this and the other ships that I have from Occre. America - sailing yacht, Royal Fortune - Pirate Ship, Terror - Ice Explorer, Flying Dutchman - Mythical ship, San Felipe - Spanish Warship, Amerigo Vespucci - Italian trainer.
