The training ship named after a writer (1958)

The Gorch Fock carries a writer's name: the pen name of Johann Kinau, a sailor and storyteller of the North Sea who was killed at Jutland in 1916. Launched in 1958 at the Blohm & Voss yard to the plans of her 1933 predecessor, she has trained German naval cadets ever since from her home port of Kiel. For thirty years she also sailed in every wallet in the country: she was the ship on the ten-mark note.

The present day Gorch Fock is the cadet training ship of the German Navy. She was built at the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg, based on the plans for the previous version, built in 1933.

She was launched on 23rd August 1958 and is based at the port of the city of Kiel. She regularly participates in events organised by the Sail Training Association.
