Fifteen hours against an entire fleet (1591)

The Revenge, launched at Deptford in 1577, introduced the race-built design: low castles, fine lines, steady gun platforms. She was Drake's flagship against the Spanish Armada in 1588. Three years later, off Flores in the Azores, she was left alone facing more than fifty Spanish ships. She held out for fifteen hours of action under Richard Grenville, who would rather have blown her up than surrender her; her crew refused. Taken at last, she was sunk by a storm on the way to Spain.
