History of the HMS Beagle
The HMS Beagle is one of the most renowned ships in history. It became famous for its scientific voyage under Commander Robert FitzRoy, joined by a young Charles Darwin — an expedition that forever transformed our understanding of nature and science.
Launched on the River Thames on May 11, 1820, the Beagle was built at the Woolwich shipyards. During the coronation of King George IV that same year, she proudly became the first vessel to sail beneath the new London Bridge.
The HMS Beagle completed three major expeditions, but it was her second voyage that changed the course of history. Darwin spent more than three years exploring land and seas, collecting insights that would inspire one of the most influential scientific theories ever written.
