Soleil Royal: when Louis XIV's sun became a ship (1670)

The Soleil Royal was Louis XIV's floating manifesto: built at Brest between 1668 and 1670, her gilded stern carried the emblem of the Sun King across the seas. As Tourville's flagship she led the French to victory at Beachy Head in 1690, the greatest French naval success of the war. Two years later, at Barfleur, 45 French ships faced 97 of the enemy; badly damaged, she ran aground at Cherbourg, where English fireships burned her. France soon launched another Soleil Royal: the sun could not be allowed to go out.

The History of the Soleil Royal: Naval Icon of the Sun King

Origins and symbolism

Commissioned in the late 1600s in Brest for the navy of Louis XIV, the Soleil Royal was the most magnificent ship in France’s fleet. Its golden carvings and sun motif symbolized the power and grandeur of the Sun King himself. More than a warship, it was a floating expression of royal dominance.

In battle: glory and naval power

Flagship of Admiral Anne Hilarion de Tourville, it played a key role in the Nine Years’ War and major battles like Beachy Head (1690). Its blend of firepower and maneuverability made it a tactical powerhouse at sea.

Occre has spent years researching this Admiralty-style model, which respects the building logic of the Brest-built ship: keel and frames precisely aligned, hull planking with realistic thicknesses and curves, rigging and sails with diameters and drops true to scale. And the decoration that made the ship famous — the stern gallery, the figurehead and the Sun King's mouldings — reproduced with defined sculptural relief. Every unit comes with a numbered plate, certificate of authenticity, collector's commemorative coin and a solid oak display stand.

Its 10,915 parts and around a thousand hours of building are served in fine materials: solid oak in frames, beams and stand; solid mahogany in the outer planking, masts, stern gallery, keel, rudder, balconies and gun carriages; cast ornamentation with a brass-finish plating, chains and cannons turned from solid brass, fleur-de-lis brackets in a copper finish, and hand-sewn cotton sails with boltropes.
