Four gun decks, 140 guns (1769)

The Santísima Trinidad was launched at Havana in 1769 and became the most heavily armed ship in the world: the only one with four gun decks, carrying up to 140 guns after her refits. They called her the Escorial of the seas. At Trafalgar, six British ships engaged her at once, mistaking her for the allied flagship; dismasted and with hundreds of casualties, she struck her colours as evening fell. She never even reached Gibraltar as a prize: the storm sank her days later.

The Santísima Trinidad was built in Havana and launched on 2nd March 1769. It was the biggest warship of the 18th century, with 130 guns. After taking part in the naval campaigns of the late 18th and early 19th century, it last saw active service at the battle of Trafalgar, under the ensign of rear admiral Cisneros, where it was dismasted by the English fleet.
