Discover the Royal Fortune pirate ship model kit, the flagship of Bartholomew Roberts — known as Black Bart — one of the most legendary names in 18th-century piracy. This OcCre wooden model ship kit invites you to build, piece by piece, the vessel of the man who captured over 400 ships in just three years and marked the end of the Golden Age of Piracy.
History of the Royal Fortune, Black Bart's Ship
In 1719, a Welsh sailor was captured by pirates. He wanted no part of it. But when the crew elected him captain, Bartholomew Roberts never looked back. In just three years he became the most successful pirate in history, capturing more vessels than anyone before or since.
Roberts didn't fit the pirate mould. While others drank rum until they dropped, he preferred tea. He wore crimson silk, a feathered hat and a gold chain with a diamond cross stolen from the King of Portugal himself. He was feared from Brazil to Newfoundland. He created one of the strictest pirate codes ever known. And he designed his own flag: himself standing, sword in hand, on the heads of his enemies from Barbados and Martinique — marked with the initials ABH and AMH.
The name Royal Fortune didn't belong to a single ship. Roberts renamed every vessel he took as his flagship. It wasn't just a name — it was a pact. Because for him, fortune was never an accident. It was something to be conquered.
His end came on 5 February 1722 off Cape Lopez, when grapeshot from HMS Swallow struck him in the first broadside. His crew threw his body overboard before the authorities could seize it. Even in death, he refused to let others decide his fate. Many historians consider the Golden Age of Piracy ended with him.
Little-known facts:
In his boldest raid, Roberts approached a Portuguese fleet of 42 vessels disguised as a French merchant. He escaped with 40,000 gold coins and a diamond cross intended for the King of Portugal. In Newfoundland, he captured 22 merchant ships and 150 fishing boats in a single harbour, almost without resistance. And the nickname "Black Bart" was never used in his lifetime — it appeared years later in a poem, as if the legend needed time to catch up with the man.

Each wood has been chosen for a reason. Limewood offers a soft, fine grain ideal for carving intricate details. African walnut provides the dark tone and hardness of the hull planking. And sapelli, with its rich reddish grain, adds the warmth of noble hardwoods. Together, they reproduce the textures and tones that make this model a truly distinctive piece. Photo-etched brass parts faithfully replicate the original fittings and cannons, while hand-sewn cotton sails complete a silhouette that commands attention on any shelf.
